ABOUT THE DELAWARE CHORAL SCHOLARS
DELAWARE CHORAL SCHOLARS: Artistry. Excellence. Community.
The DELAWARE CHORAL SCHOLARS PROJECT represents the vibrant community of choral artistry that has grown out of a sustained tradition of musical excellence in ensemble singing at the University of Delaware. Comprised of current students, alumni, and friends, DCS unites a dynamic network of musicians dedicated to collaborative artistry, cultural exchange, and the pursuit of choral excellence.
As a project-based ensemble, DCS curates innovative musical and educational experiences, including residential summer programs for singers and conductors, community collaborations, and international exchange initiatives. These projects bring renowned conductors and composers to Delaware while also offering opportunities for DCS artists to travel the globe to engage in performance, cultural dialogue, and competition.
DCS has earned distinction on the world stage, receiving top prizes at the Tolosa International Choral Contest (Spain, 2025), The International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf (Germany, 2025), the 2024 World Choir Games (New Zealand, 2024), and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod (Wales, 2023). As of August 2024, the Delaware Choral Scholars hold the #1 position on Interkultur’s World Rankings list, reflecting the ensemble’s growing reputation as one of the premier choral collectives in the world.
Dr. Paul D. Head
Founder, Artistic Director
Paul D. Head serves as the Director of Choral Studies at the University of Delaware and is the founder and director of the Delaware Choral Scholars. He has conducted honor choirs and clinics throughout Europe, Asia and 29 of the 50 United States and is frequently sought out to adjudicate festivals and competitions throughout Asia, Europe, North and South America. Choirs under his direction have won numerous awards in Spain, Hungary, and Germany in addition division winners at the Llangollen Eisteddfod, the Grand Prix award at the Estonia International Choral Competition, and most recently named as the Interkultur #1 choir at the 2024 World Choir Games.
He is a published author and editor with GIA and Oxford University Press and has led nearly two dozen international choral endeavors since he began teaching high school in 1987. He resides with his wife of 39 years in southeastern Pennsylvania, is the father of three grown children, and takes pride in his role of faithful walking companion to Charley the Dog.
